Compound Words

The WordList editor extracts all words from the database, and breaks them apart using spaces and slashes as word de-limiters.  However, some words exist together and, while existing on their own, mean something new when combined.  Cities are frequent examples, since many city names are made up of several words.  Examples include New York, Powell River, St. Petersburg etc.

To create a compound word, click "Create Compound Words" on the WordList Editor

1)   The WordList.

This is the full word list that is similar to the "Corrected WordList" in the WordList Editor. It is all words except those ignored.  Double-clicking on the word adds it to the currently being created compound word (see (3))

2)   All the occurrences of the particular word.  See WordList Editor for more information.

3)    The compound word currently being created - the user can double-click words in (1) to add them, or type in new text using the keyboard.

4)   Clear the compound word currently being created.

5)   List of all compound words created so far.

6)   List of all component words removed/ignored so far.

7)   List of all component words kept so far.

8)   Add the compound word, and create more.

9)  Finish creating compound words.

10) Go Back to the WordList Editor

When making a compound word, another distinction must be considered.  Certain component words (words that make up compound words) are necessary by themselves (eg.  "new" in New York), and are used in contexts outside of the compound word.  Others, however, are only needed as part of the compound word, and either don't make sense outside of it, or are not necessary as part of the current Legend Burster session (possible example - "York" in New York).  Thus, when creating a compound word out of existing words in the WordList, the user is asked if he/she wants to ignore the component word.

If the user ignores the component word, it no longer appears in the word list, and is added to the ListBox "Component Words Removed".  Otherwise, it is added to the list "Component Words Kept"

The user can create as many compound words as necessary on this screen.

Modifying Existing Compound Words

Creation of compound words leads to three classes of words:

1) Compound Words

2) Ignored Component Words

3) Non-Ignored Component Words

All of these can be managed.  Existing compound words can be removed.  Ignored component words can be un-ignored.  And Non-Ignored component words can be ignored.

To modify existing compound and component words, click "Modify Compound Words" on the WordList Editor

On this screen, a compound word "continental margin" has been created, with "continental" ignored, but not "margin"
