Datasets to assist with Standardisation

Free to download!

This page contains links to TLE files available for download. Select the dataset you require by clicking on it in the lists below.

IMPORTANT:  Non-Hierarchical use of TLE datasets.

These downloads provide valuable word-lists, usually with brief definitions, which can be used in pick-lists for many database and mapping applications, even if they are not "hierarchy-enabled".  By using terms taken only from these standard lists, it will be much easier to integrate your data with data from other sources which have also used the same standard terms.

The Internet has solved many of our connectivity problems, while XML, dbf, mdb, csv, rdf, etc have standardised formats to a great extent.  The development and adoption of standard terminologies, where appropriate, is the last hurdle on the path to interoperability.

Geological Data

Description Download
OneGeology's aim is to create dynamic digital geological map data for the world. Download
British Geological Survey Rock Classification System.
This is provided with the permission of the British Geological Survey.

Last updated: January 2002.
Download
NADM-Contibuted Rock Classification System.
This is provided with the permission of the author, Dr Bruce Johnson, of the USGS, and has the advantage of including brief descriptions of rock-type names used.

Last updated: November 2002.
Download
Rock-Forming Minerals from Dana.
This is a combination of the minerals in "Dana's Handbook of Mineralogy", available from this web site, and a hierarchical arrangement of mineral names used in the USGS deposit type descriptions. The two need to be integrated by slotting all Dana's minerals into a geologically useful hierarchical classification, but using them side-by-side in the MineMatch system until such an integration is completed does not cause any problems.

Last updated: July 2003.
Download
Geological Time Scale.
This is a hierarchical re-arrangement of the tabular data that can be downloaded from the Australian Geological Survey Organisation.
