Controlling Data Display in LegendBurster TreeViews

Many of LegendBurster's data displays use TreeViews.  These are "collapsible" hierarchical data displays, which use a "+" sign to indicate the presence of hidden lower levels of a hierarchy.  Clicking on the "+" sign expands the hierarchy, and changes the "+" to a "-".  Clicking on the "-" will hide the attached branches of the hierarchy again.

Listed below are actions that can be carried out on most LegendBurster TreeViews:

Changing Field Widths

The widths of fields (columns) in all TreeViews may be changed by left-clicking on the boundary bar between any two columns, keeping the mouse button down, and dragging the boundary to a new position.  On release of the mouse button, the column with adjust its width accordingly.

Re-Arranging Field Order

A field's horizontal position in a TreeView may be changed by left-clicking anywhere in the field header, keeping the mouse button down, and dragging the column to its desired new position.  Once the dragging has proceeded a couple of centimetres, a transparent image of the header will appear, alongside a green "position indicator" bar. On release of the mouse button, the field will move to its newly indicated position

Sorting Fields

A single left-click in any field-header will sort the TreeView records, first in ascending order, and then a second click will sort them in descending order.  Please note that the sorting is carried out on a "per level" basis in the TreeView.

Adding Word-Wrap

Very often data within a field is obscured because the field is not wide enough to display it all.  As an alternative to adjusting the field width (see above), the "word-wrap" parameter may be turned on, which cause all displayed records in the TreeView to be expanded vertically to show all text in all fields.  The "word-wrap" parameter can usually be turned on or off in a TreeView either from the drop-down menu activated by right-clicking in the TreeView, or from the current window's View menu.

Using "ToolTips"

Another way of viewing text obscured by narrow field widths in many TreeViews is called a "tooltip".  A tooltip is the display, for a few seconds, of the complete text in an obscured field, brought about by letting the mouse arrow come to rest on the cell of interest.  If the tooltip disappears too quickly, a small movement of the mouse will cause it to re-appear again.
